I wrote my own software, as I couldn’t find anything that did what I needed. I also paid a lot of attention to the screen layout, because it had to look good on a small touchscreen. That explains why the buttons are so big ;)
The menu gives access to all modules, but you can run each module separately if you would like. If you only would like to use the audio player than that is perfectly possible.
Writing the software gave me a few challenges :
- the screen is 7” and 800x480 pixels. That’s not much. A secondary 22” monitor is available, but only for watching movies or video conference with Skype.
- no keyboard or mouse, only touchscreen
- it had to be possible to watch a movie, listen to audio and watch pictures at the same time.
- The last time I programmed was about 15 years ago
Many ideas came and went, but this is the version which I’m using now :
Audio
A flexible audio player, that can play MP3 and internet streams. It also allows to consult the weather, shows the current playlist and the time.
Photo
Allows to use the monitor as photo frame. Basically a slideshow.
Video
Show videos on the secondary screen
Calendar
A calendar, using Google Calendar as database.
Calculator
A little calculator
Phone
Make phone calls with Skype.
Stopwatch
A stopwatch, counting down from any number of minutes.
